ABOUT US

National AIDS Research Institute (NARI), a permanent Institute under Indian Council of Medical Research, an autonomous body under Ministry of Health and family Welfare, Government of India, is housed in seven-acre campus in Bhosari, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Pune.

By virtue of its multi-faceted research activities, the institute has a unique place in the field of HIV/AIDS research in the country. This is consistent with NARI's exclusive mandate of research on HIV infection and AIDS for generating new knowledge and supplementing the National programmes for AIDS control.

A team of dedicated and well trained scientists has been established over the years to sustain and expand these efforts and contribute to national efforts for control of this epidemic. The Institute functions with a small core of technical and administrative staff, with the support of staff engaged under various projects.

NARI receives its funding from its parent agency, Indian Council of Medical Research. In addition funding is received from various national and international agencies through extra-mural research programmes

Starting in 1992, NARI has established a facility with trained manpower, state-of-the-art laboratories, well equipped clinics and effective community outreach. This has resulted in an impressive array of research papers during last decade and generation of funds through extra-mural projects.

The research programmes are conducted by six divisions of the Institute including Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Serology and Immunology, Clinical Sciences, Molecular Virology, Microbiology, and Behavioral and Social Sciences.

The main campus houses core laboratories, an HIV referral clinic, a newly commissioned administrative block, Library, Auditorium and Training laboratories. The Institute runs seven clinics in different parts of the city which provide services such as HIV testing, counseling, care and support in addition to implementation of various clinical research studies. The campus infrastructure also includes residential accommodation for staff, incinerator for biological waste management and an uninterrupted power back-up for the laboratories.
